Tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm an engineer-turned-designer from Chennai, India. I began my career as an automotive test analyst for two years but felt drawn to the creative field, which led me to pursue an M.A. in the History of Fine Arts. After that, I worked as a Creative and Marketing Head at a well-known fashion and apparel brand for a year. My passion for sustainability and making a positive impact on the world inspired me to move internationally to pursue an MSc in Textile Sustainability and Innovation.

What made you want to apply to your course and to Leeds?

Ever since I wrote my thesis on sustainable fashion during my first master's program, I have been drawn to the topic. I wanted to explore the industry’s sustainability goals and initiatives in greater depth. My experience as a Creative Head for an apparel brand gave me valuable insights into the business perspective of fashion, but I became increasingly curious about the technical aspects of sustainability. I wanted to understand how sustainability concepts are actually implemented, the challenges faced, and the emerging technologies in this field.

The MSc in Textile Sustainability and Innovation at Leeds is a perfect fit for me because it covers both the technical foundations of textiles and the business and management aspects. This comprehensive approach will allow me to understand the textile sector from both perspectives, equipping me with a complete understanding of the industry. Leeds’ focus on combining theory with practical application further convinced me that this is the right place to deepen my knowledge and drive meaningful change in the world of sustainable fashion.

How has your understanding of the subject evolved since starting the course?

Since starting the course, my understanding of the textile industry and sustainability has deepened significantly. The learning curve has been steady, revealing new and often surprising insights about the industry. I've come to grasp the seriousness of sustainability on a real-time basis, which has been eye-opening. With a solid foundation of background knowledge, I've been able to critically question various aspects of the industry and think of solutions using the concepts taught. This journey has truly been enlightening and has further fueled my passion for making a positive impact in the textile sector.

How have your studies prepared you for your future career?

This course has opened up a wide range of career opportunities for me, from research-based roles to product design and business model development. It has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of both the technical and business aspects of the textile industry. I've developed valuable skills in critical thinking, analytical research, and innovative design. Additionally, the course has emphasized the importance of cross-field collaboration, allowing me to work effectively with professionals from various disciplines. These experiences have given me a solid grasp of sustainability practices and their real-world applications. These skills and insights will be invaluable in my future career, enabling me to contribute effectively to the evolving landscape of sustainable fashion and textiles.

These resources have been instrumental in helping us conduct our research efficiently and effectively, providing us with practical insights into the textile industry. The learning environment here supports both theoretical understanding and practical application, making the entire journey a highly knowledgeable and valuable one.

Tell us about any activities you were involved with at university outside of your studies?
