Call for Abstracts: UK Northern Metaphysics Network

We are excited to host the next Northern Metaphysics Network event on 11th – 12th May 2026.

Are you a PGR researching metaphysics (broadly construed) at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, York, or Durham? If so, we invite you to submit an abstract for the upcoming UK Northern Metaphysics Network Event.

The event is organised by Jonathon Hawkins and Professor Helen Beebee, and is generously supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities, and the Centre for Theoretical Philosophy.


About the Network

The network aims to bring together researchers working in metaphysics across the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, York, and Durham. Our second meeting will take the form of a two-day event, featuring presentations from ten graduate speakers alongside two keynote lectures delivered by faculty members from our participating institutions (to be announced).

Call for Abstracts

We invite submissions of abstracts of up to 500 words (excluding bibliography) from graduate students affiliated with one of our member universities.

Talks will last 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion.

Submissions should address topics in metaphysics, broadly construed, including (but not limited to):

  • Ontology, Metaontology, and Meta-Metaphysics
  • Causation
  • Time
  • Laws of Nature
  • Essence and Essentialism
  • Non-existence
  • Fiction
  • Powers and Dispositions
  • Action
  • Fundamentality
  • Metaphysical Explanation

  • Social Ontology
  • Modal Epistemology

Attendance and Registration

There is no registration fee for this event. All are welcome to attend, although speakers must be from one of our member universities. A form for registration will be announced nearer to the date to help us to accommodate catering.

Funding and Event Information

A financial contribution towards accommodation is available for speakers. Applicants requiring support should indicate this in the submission form.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided for speakers and attendees across both days.

The first day of the event will conclude with the network’s annual AGM, followed by an optional evening meal (at attendees’ own expense).
