HPS work in progress seminar

Dr Marina Baldissera Pacchetti will speak on the topic 'Structural Uncertainty: a nuanced account through the lens of model building.'

Dr Marina Baldissera is a Philosopher of Science working at the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy.

Abstract: I will start by reviewing some of the existing literature on structural uncertainty. I will argue that while philosophers have identified an important problem, their approach does not explore structural uncertainty in detail. Next, I will develop a set of desiderata that a detailed account of structural uncertainty should meet. These desiderata are aimed at guiding the development of an account of structural uncertainty that is useful to scientists, philosophers and policymakers. Finally, I will start sketching an account by focusing on one particular aspect of model building: the assumptions behind the choices of parametrization schemes, their empirical adequacy and their conceptual justificatory role.

The WIP seminar of the Centre for History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds runs weekly during term time, and provides an opportunity for faculty and graduate students to refine their projects with a collaborative audience.

Seminars are free and open to all.
