Health, Medicine and Society PhD Studentship Opportunity in the School of History
Closing Date: 24 January 2018. Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in History to be undertaken in the field of Health, Medicine and Society (HMS).
The social history of health and medicine is a significant growth area within the School of History, reflected by the new Health, Medicine and Society MA programme and the Health, Medicine and Society research cluster. This PhD studentship will enable an outstanding applicant to both benefit from and contribute to the growing success of this increasingly vibrant research area within the School of History.
To apply for the HMS scholarship, applicants should submit an application to the School of History and International Medieval Studies Scholarship competition. In doing so, please ensure that you answer yes to the question, ‘does your research fall within ‘Health, Medicine and Society’. Note that there is no pre-defined topic or research area attached to the studentship: you will need to define your own PhD project. Within your application, you should highlight how your research fits with and will contribute this growing area of strength within the School of History. Your project could involve any aspect of the history of health, medicine and society, broadly defined. You can focus on any chronological area and any region of the world and the PhD can be supervised by any academic staff with relevant expertise. Your primary supervisor must be based in History but we welcome applications that involve co-supervision with colleagues at the Centre for the History and Philosophy of Science or the Centre for Medical Humanities, or other relevant Schools and Centres. We recommend you discuss your proposed project with your supervisor before applying. We also welcome applications that involve external partners. Your PhD project might include collaborations with the Thackray Medical Museum, Leeds Museums and Galleries, other archive and heritage organisations, charities relating to health and medicine, or the NHS.
The studentship will pay fees at the Home/EU rate and a maintenance grant at the RCUK rate (£14,553 in 2017-18).
