Call for poetry and prose readings for Words Worth Reading: The Writers' Room

Contributions are welcome from students, staff and Postgraduate Researchers from the Faculty of Art Humanities and Cultures for an event organised as part of Words Worth Reading: The Writers' Room.

Words Worth Reading: The Writers’ Room is an upcoming exhibition curated by Chris Taylor, Simon Lewandowski and Lu Rose Cunningham, opening next month in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies’ Project Space.

The exhibition and events programme bring together the Wild Pansy Press (celebrating its 30th year) and an array of London and Northern-based artists who have undertaken its London residency.

The opening event on Monday 27 April (5 to 8pm) will include readings from 6:30 to 7.15pm.

We invite you to give a reading of your original poetry or prose related to one of the following subjects:

  • art
  • publishing

  • community
  • experimental literature
  • automatic writing
  • other related suggestions welcome

If you would like to participate, please email lucyrosecunningham@gmail.com with your name, school, title of the reading, duration and sample of writing by Friday 17 April.

Individual poetry and prose readings should be a maximum of 5-7 minutes long.

About the exhibition

The Wild Pansy Press was established in 1995 by Simon Lewandowski (Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Leeds) and Chris Taylor (Professor in Fine Art Practice, School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies). It is a collective art practice and small publishing house which has built up a considerable catalogue of books and projects, often linking a publication to an exhibition in ways which extend and confound the usual notions of a catalogue.

Based in Leeds and London, The Wild Pansy Press actively develops partnerships with other groups to build a network of practitioners who explore and advance publication – in its widest sense – as both a distributional strategy and medium of practice.

In Words Worth Reading: The Writers' Room at the University of Leeds, we embrace and share printed matter as a tangible mode of sharing ideas and work.

We strongly believe that the written and spoken word, and publication as a medium, are inherently democratic and enfranchising, offering a (literal) voice to all participants.

Here we highlight both publications and archival matter from the Wild Pansy Press, and the practices of previous Writers’ Room residents – Elaine FisherGeorge Storm FletcherLily PetchEmily Fielding and Joanna Jowett.

Emily and Joanna will host open workshops with us during this week-long exhibition (details below).

Curated by Chris TaylorSimon Lewandowski and Lu Rose Cunningham.

The exhibition runs from 28 April to 2 May (open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm).

Full details about the exhibition and events programme can be found here.
