Professor Simon Ball delivered the Eugene Meyer Lecture in British History and Literature at Bard College, NY on 17 April 2018. Previous Meyer Lecturers have included Sir David Cannadine and Colm Tóibín. ‘The Real World of James Bond’ explored how NID (Naval Intelligence Division) generated cultural capital for the field of intelligence in Britain. Ball was Principal Investigator on the AHRC-Gerda Henkel Foundation Project Cultures of Intelligence. The underlying research for the lecture will be published in the Leeds-Mannheim-Potsdam Cultures of Intelligence collection for the German Historical Institute London and Ball’s forthcoming monograph, The Secret History.
