Dr Katie Carpenter is featured on More4 show discussing Caroline of Brunswick and her notorious marriage to the Prince of Wales
The Royals: A History of Scandals is currently running on More 4 and on February 20th, episode four features Dr Katie Carpenter, Lecturer in Public History, discussing her research into Caroline of Brunswick, who married the Prince of Wales in scandalous circumstances in 1795.
This unprecedented episode in British history saw Queen Caroline, the estranged wife and consort of George IV, put on trial for adultery in the House of Lords. As well as marking a milestone in parliamentary and royal history, it was also an important chapter in the nineteenth-century radical movement.
I'm excited that the audience will get to see these documents and find out more about Caroline of Brunswick. Caroline loved to be the centre of attention, and I know she'd be delighted to be featured in a documentary!
Dr Carpenter said. “I had a lovely time re-visiting the Parliamentary Archives, where I was previously an AHRC Creative Economy Engagement Fellow. I'll be talking about my research on Queen Caroline of Brunswick, the loathed wife of George IV. As part of this research, I uncovered some exciting documents in the Parliamentary Archives that weren't in the catalogue. These include a letter from George IV to Caroline outlining the terms of their marital separation, and a promise they'll never have to have sex again!”
