History Professor Nominated for Non-Fiction Prize

Leeds University's Professor Stephen Alford has been nominated for the Hessell-Titman Prize for his book about the rise of British capitalism.

Professor Stephen Alford, Chair in Early Modern British History, has been nominated for the prestigious Hessell-Tiltman Prize for his book “London’s Triumph”. The prize is awarded by English PEN , a renowned association of book writers, and is presented each year in recognition of excellence for a non-fiction book on a historical subject. “London’s Triumph” focuses on the rise of capitalism in the UK and looks at the rise of Britain as a global trading city during the Tudor period. 

Professor Alford is delighted with the nomination and said "I am particularly pleased about the Hessell-Tiltman prize nomination because of PEN and what it stands for in terms of freedom of expression, and also because of the terms of reference for the prize itself -- that any book has to have literary merit and be written for a wide readership." He also been promoting his book across the Atlantic and was interviewed for by the Folger Shakespeare Library. The podcast of the interview can be heard here.
