Level 2 Art and Design students' show 'Lieux de Mémoire' now available to view online

Students on Level 2 of BA (Hons) Art and Design have been exhibiting the imaginative results of their second semester’s work on social media.

Their work is available to view on the Foyer Gallery’s Instagram in an exhibition entitled ‘Lieux de Memoire’.

For student Gabi Centro, it allowed an opportunity for many: “to tune into personal themes of nostalgia, dreaming, internal, and external space which have all been so intrinsically linked to our current physical situations, creating even stronger links within our work. Being physically confined to university rooms and small desks, has allowed the mental ideas (of the brief) to expand further, into resourceful, imaginative and fantastical ways to present our work.” 

For this iteration, students have organised themselves into five curatorial groups which allows for particular nuanced threads and connections to be brought to the fore. This diverse and vivid work is a testament to the creativity and resourcefulness of these students who have had to work away from the University. As Jamie Sheridan notes: “The days spent at home, away from our loved ones, resulted in only one overall conclusion, Self-reflection. This time to reflect has resulted in a new perspective we never thought we would have”.

For Frances Thompson: “our experience as practicing artists and designers has shifted to discover new ways of envisaging our work, notably through the home environment and the locality in which we reside. The notion of ‘Lieux de Memoire’, or ‘places of memory’, seeks to capture ideas of personal comfort and belonging, discovered most recently within the wider community setting. Our exhibition poster signifies a narrative depicting the thriving student community of Hyde Park, significant as a place and memory of current and former students”. 

‘Lieux de Memoire’ celebrates and congratulates students for the extraordinary work that has been created in this time.

The exhibition includes a Zoom event on Thursday 13 May at 13.00.
