Dr Matilda Carter

Profile

I joined IDEA in 2025, prior to which I held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Glasgow, working on a project exploring spatial justice in sites of dementia care. This built on work conducted during my doctoral studies in the University College London School of Public Policy, which was, in turn, inspired by my decade-long career in social care. I have since adapted my thesis, which was awarded the Department of Political Science 2021-2022 Best Doctoral Thesis award, into a monograph published with Cambridge University Press.

Between my PhD and my BA fellowship, I held a fixed-term teaching post in social and political philosophy at King’s College London. During my time there, I contributed to the activities of the Sowerby Philosophy & Medicine project.

Research interests

My research is centred around questions of ethics, justice, and public policy in the provision of social care. I have, in particular, been interested in how we can achieve egalitarian relations in dementia care, as well as in inherently asymmetrical caring relationships more widely. I am currently working on broader quesitons about the social care sector, including questions of public policy, institutional design, and intergenerational justice.

I have also published work on the philosopy of sex and gender, and am currently developing a project on public policy and reasonable disagreement about gender alongside Lilith Mace from the University of Glasgow.
