Profile
My Role
As a Student Support Officer in the Student Education and Experience Service at the University of Leeds, specifically in the School of Design, my role is to provide tailored guidance and support to students throughout their academic journey. I act as a first point of contact for students experiencing challenges—whether academic, personal, or wellbeing-related—helping them navigate university life and access the resources they need to succeed. My role involves offering one-to-one support, signposting students to specialist services such as counselling, financial aid, or disability support, and working closely with academic staff to ensure that students receive the appropriate guidance. A key part of my job is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where students feel comfortable discussing their concerns, whether they need help managing their workload, are struggling with personal difficulties, or simply need someone to listen. I am also involved in proactive wellbeing initiatives within the university, ensuring that students not only receive reactive support when issues arise but also have access to preventative measures that promote resilience and positive mental health. Through this work, I aim to empower students to overcome challenges and make the most of their university experience.
Academic Background
I have always been passionate about understanding human behaviour, mental health, and the factors that influence wellbeing, which led me to pursue a BSc in Psychology at Lancaster University. This degree provided me with a strong foundation in psychological research methods, cognitive processes, and mental health disorders. Eager to build on this knowledge, I went on to complete an MSc in Development, Disorders, and Clinical Practice at the University of York. During my master’s degree, I focused on neurodevelopmental conditions, mental health interventions, and clinical assessment techniques, further developing my ability to apply psychological principles in real-world support settings. My dissertation explored the experiences of neurotypical parents and siblings of young people with Down syndrome, examining the emotional, psychological, and social dynamics within these families. This research deepened my understanding of the complexities of family relationships in the context of developmental disorders and strengthened my ability to provide empathetic, evidence-based support. The combination of my undergraduate and postgraduate studies has equipped me with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to support students effectively in my current role.
Interests
Outside of work, I have a deep passion for musical theatre, both watching live performances and listening to cast recordings. I love how musical theatre brings stories to life through music, and I’m always excited to see new productions and revisit my favourites. One show particularly close to my heart is Come From Away, which I find incredibly moving due to its powerful storytelling and uplifting message of human connection. Alongside my love for theatre, I am a huge fan of Elton John & Billy Joel, whose music has been a constant source of joy and inspiration. Whether it’s Elton John’s heartfelt ballads or Billy Joel’s storytelling through song, their music plays a big role in my life. When I’m not immersed in theatre or music, I love spending quality time with my fiancee Amy, as well as my friends and family. Whether it’s a relaxed evening at home, a day out exploring new places, or simply catching up over coffee, I cherish the time I get to spend with the people closest to me. These interests allow me to unwind and recharge, helping me bring enthusiasm and energy to my work in student support.
