Lunar Mirror

‘Lunar Mirror’ is a temporary site-specific installation by second year fine art student Laura Green, taking place in the stairwell of the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies.

Visible only when weather conditions permit, the work uses window vinyl to modify the shadows cast onto the space and produce a fractured representation of the moon.

As the work relies on sunlight, its presence in the space mirrors outside cloud coverage and the theoretical visibility of the actual moon in the sky. Simultaneously, it is influenced by the time-dependent position of the sun; it is transformed throughout the day as light moves across the stairwell’s architecture, and its form is affected by the seasonal tilt of the Earth.

The installation is timed around the full ‘Flower Moon’ on May 1st. It aims to play with the boundary between exterior and interior by drawing attention to the interaction of sunlight with the architecture of the space, which the artist has observed and documented over the last several months.
