‘Til the Skies are Clear — exhibition

‘Til the Skies are Clear is an exhibition created by MA students from the University of Leeds, on behalf of the Feminist Archive North.

Showing and celebrating the feminist peace camps of Greenham Common (1981 to 2000) and Menwith Hill (1984), the exhibition looks at how the women’s fight for nuclear peace shapes the world today.

Women at both camps wanted to bring attention to the dangers of keeping nuclear weapons and promote a nuclear free future. They peacefully demonstrated die-ins, blockaded bases, breached fences, sang songs and held vigils for those who had lost their lives to nuclear catastrophe. Their actions attracted media, national and global attention with the intention of having their voices heard.

Our multi-sensory exhibition stays true to the authentic voice of these women. It tells the story of the camps and the fearless feminists who protested in them through artefacts, interactive displays, and audio links to their songs. In the words of the women from 1984: “We will survive”.

‘Til the Skies are Clear is part of a wider series of exhibitions and projects undertaken by MA students as part of an Interpretations course module.
