Dr David Ireland

I completed my BA and MMus at the University of Leeds before undertaking doctoral study which resulted in the completion of my thesis in 2012. Prior to my current role, I previously worked in the School of Music as a Visiting Lecturer and Teaching Fellow, and as an Academic Staff Development Officer in the Academic Practice team in Organisational Development & Professional Learning (formerly the University's Staff and Departmental Development Unit) between 2015 and 2019. I was also awarded a developmental University Student Education Fellowship to conduct pedagogic research (2016-2019).

Research interests

I am particularly interested in how music moves us emotionally, how we can come to perceive meaning in music, and especially in the application of these ideas in the context of film music. Much of my published research seeks to theorise the idea of incongruent or mismatched film music and to consider the impact of this type of film-music relationship on the perception of meaning and susequent emotional response. My research takes an inter- and multidisciplinary approach which draws extensively on research in the fields of music psychology and film music studies, as well as wider bodies of research like musical semiotics.
