Research interests

I am particularly interested in how music moves us emotionally, how we can come to perceive meaning in music, and especially in the application of these ideas in the context of film music. Much of my published research seeks to theorise the idea of incongruent or mismatched film music and to consider the impact of this type of film-music relationship on the perception of meaning and susequent emotional response. My research takes an inter- and multidisciplinary approach which draws extensively on research in the fields of music psychology and film music studies, as well as wider bodies of research like musical semiotics.
