Public talk - 'Gaslighting: The Evolution of a Concept Across Art, Relationships and Politics

Join CLSR PhD Isobel Logan for a public talk on gaslighting at The Wardrobe, Leeds, for Pints of Knowledge

On the 9th August, Isobel Logan will be giving a public talk entitled ‘Gaslighting: The Evolution of a Concept Across Art, Relationships and Politics’ as part of the Pints of Knowledge Series.

Abstract: From a 1938 play to manipulation, post-truth politics, and colonial power, the concept of gaslighting has undergone a remarkable transformation. We’ll trace the journey of a contested concept born in pre-war literature, through the Hollywood thriller that won Ingrid Bergman an Oscar, to a powerful tool for understanding abuse, oppression, and struggles over reality itself. Along the way, I’ll ask what philosophers can learn from the life of a concept: What do we want our terms to do for us? How much control do we have over the meaning of our words? And what happens when our concepts take on new lives?
