School of Languages, Cultures & Societies in top 100 best places to study in the world
The University of Leeds’ School of Languages, Cultures & Societies is in the top 100 places in the world for studying and research these subjects, according to the globally-respected 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The annual QS rankings draw on five key indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, the H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and impact of an academic or department at a university), and international research network.
According to these criteria, the University of Leeds is the 55th best institution for study and research in Modern Languages and the 90th best for Linguistics.
The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds is one of the largest and most diverse of its kind in the UK. We work across 14 degree languages, cultures and societies; Classics; Film Studies; Comparative Literature; Intercultural Studies; Linguistics; Translation and Interpreting. We teach English on pre-sessional and in-sessional courses through our Language Centre, and other languages on our Languages for All courses, to students across the University. Our research and teaching is inherently interdisciplinary and ranges across the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and crosses the border with STEM disciplines. This excellent global ranking highlights the achievements of our staff and students across all areas in the School and further cements Leeds’ reputation as a sector leader.
The QS rankings show that the University of Leeds is the 51st best institution for the arts and humanities in the world, and the 8th best in the UK.
The University has also been ranked:
- 36th for English Literature and Language
- 44th for Philosophy
- In the top 100 for History; Theology, Divinity, and Religious Studies; and the Performing Arts (which includes the School of Music and the School of Performance and Cultural Industries)
- In the top 150 for Art and Design.
Together, these rankings constitute a huge success for the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Cultures, where teaching and research in the above subjects takes place.

The University of Leeds is currently ranked the 75th best university in the world, the University’s highest ever position in the QS rankings’ 20-year history. A key strength identified was the International Research Network, for which indicator the university was ranked 16th in the world.
