Tuesday Treasure: Medieval Illuminated Manuscripts

The Leeds University Library is hosting a drop-in session on Tuesday 11 February at the Treasures of the Brotherton Library to display their collection of medieval illuminated manuscripts.

Before the introduction of printing in Europe books were written by hand. Known as manuscripts, they sometimes contain illumination, where the text is decorated with colourful illustrations, decorated borders and intricate initials.

Join the team at Leeds University Library for Tuesday Treasure and discover minute detail, vivid colours and the stories behind who owned the books.

This is a unique opportunity to get up-close with some of the oldest material in the collections. Examples of French, German, Italian, English and Netherlandish manuscripts will be on show.

You can see some of the collection online in the medieval illuminated manuscripts research spotlight.
