The Institute for Medieval Studies

Founded in 1967, we are a major centre for Medieval Studies in the UK. Our MA degree offers a broad variety of compulsory and optional modules to allow students to explore medieval worlds in depth, via their written and material sources. Our modules approach Medieval Studies through the connected lenses of interdisciplinarity, medievalism, languages and multiculturalism. Our PhD students are co-supervised by academic experts from a broad range of subject areas across the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures.

Alongside excellent academic guidance, we offer pastoral support and career-development opportunities, including paid internships that students can apply for, some of which offer the chance to work with one of our partner organisations or with the International Medieval Bibliography and in our Special Collections of manuscripts, incunabula and coins in the Brotherton Library.

The Institute for Medieval Studies, based in the School of History, actively works to build a diverse and inclusive community that supports all staff and students. Visit the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures’ Equality and Inclusion page to find out how to contact our School EDI Lead and access news, student resources and further information on EDI initiatives.
