We undertake a wide range of interdisciplinary research spanning the middle ages and encompassing a variety of key themes.

Our research
The Institute for Medieval Studies brings together academics who are specialists in a broad range of subjects from history, literature and art history to languages and religion.
We work on a number of collaborative projects aiming to gain a better understanding of the Medieval period, from religion to politics and culture.

The Medieval Studies research group in the School of History explores a broad chronological and thematic range, from early middle-ages to the first decades of the sixteenth century.

Northern History was the first regional historical journal in England and it was established in the School of History by Gordon Foster in 1966.
