Visiting Artist's Talk - Duncan Marquiss

Duncan Marquiss works with video, drawing, writing and music. His practice is driven by a search for patterns and connections between seemingly disconnected territories and ideas.

These analogies become the starting point for process-led artworks that create overlaps between seemingly disparate cultural references and materials. His recent film, Evolutionary Jerks & Gradualist Creeps (2016) considers connections and disconnections between the cultural and biological realms. Comparing the history of life within the fossil record with the evolution of pop music, the film takes evolutionary patterns as a cue for image-making and editing structures.

Marquiss graduated from the MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 2005 and undertook the LUX Associate Artist Programme, London, 2009. In 2015 he received the Margaret Tait Award. Recent projects include: ‘Copying Errors’, a solo exhibition at Dundee Contemporary Arts (2016); Renderuin at Glasgow International (2016); Experimenta for London Film Festival (2016); and ‘Index’ at Microscope Gallery (New York, 2015).
