Futures of the University Seminar - Humanities Scholarship Across Borders

Join us for the latest in our autumn research seminar series when we welcome speaker Dr Irina Dumitrescu, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.

Scholarship and travel have been intimately bound together for centuries. Still, the kind of work a scholar can do is affected by working conditions and local scholarly habits, meaning that an academic vita does not always translate well to a new country or culture. Countries have varying norms for prestige, speed, and quality of scholarship, determined both by tradition and by the exigencies of funding. Even what constitutes scholarship or ‘science’ may vary from place to place, especially in the humanities. At the same time, humanities scholars are increasingly pressed to cross disciplinary borders, working on large collaborative projects or in centres, and also making their work known to the broader public.

This talk will address the challenges of different kinds of ‘border crossings’ humanities scholars might do, the opportunities and drawbacks they bring with them, and their effect on how we write and publish.

The venue is Room 2.09 in the School of Fine Art History of Art & Cultural Studies, University Road at the University of Leeds. It is free to attend and all are welcome.

This event is in connection with the Futures research seminar group. It is organised by the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies as part of the autumn research seminar series.
