Visiting Artist's Talk - David Osbaldeston

The venue for this talk is Lecture Theatre F (G.74), Chemistry West Block, University of Leeds. Directions to the venue can be found online here.

David Osbaldeston divides his life between London and Manchester. His work takes the form of installations, posters, drawings, prints and self-publishing projects that all aim to disrupt the perception of an existing order by exploring properties of language that make it the principle framework upon which reality is understood.

As a point of departure, he takes regular inspiration from Ludwig Wittgenstein’s duck/rabbit experiment and the analogies between Plutarch’s Ship of Theseus paradox and Karl Marx’s maxim, ‘All that is solid melts into air’. His most recent solo work, The Top and Bottom of It at Matt’s Gallery (London, 2015) involved a time-machine fabricated from the contents of office furniture. In 2014 he was awarded the Chancellors’ Fellow Art/Writing residency at Edinburgh College of Art where he produced a major installation, The Measure of All Things at The City Dome, Collective Gallery, (2014).

Inspired by Sol LeWitt’s advice that ‘every artist should have a cheap line’ he self-publishes the quarterly publication Stellar, meticulously reproduced through free access to a university photocopier. The VAT series hosts talks by an exciting range of arts practitioners from around the world every Monday afternoon 14:00 to 15:30 during teaching weeks.

All of our talks are compulsory for all Fine Art students but open to anyone else who would like to join us.
