Sik Faan is an exhibition of oil paintings by second year fine art student Rianne Tu.

Sik Faan is a Cantonese phrase used to call someone to eat dinner. It remains one of the only phrases I can use with my grandparents that is unaffected by language barriers.

Through meticulously painting scenes of meals that I grew up with, I can express appreciation for the labour of love that is food as well as the efforts and sacrifices made by my family and others alike.

This project allows me to pay homage to the significance of food, culture, tradition, and family values especially present in diaspora communities. Food not only serves as a means to a full belly and heart – it is also the livelihood of many of the diaspora in Britain; one instance being the Chinese takeaway. So, I have chosen the family takeaway I grew up in as the venue for exhibition of my oil paintings.
