Leftovers – Lucy Crouch

A new exhibition of work by Postgraduate Researcher Lucy Crouch in our Project Space.

Lucy Crouch is presenting this exhibition as part of the final examination for her practice-led PhD at the University of Leeds, entitled ‘The gesture within matter: drawing through material.’ Her research and practice adopt an expanded definition of drawing as an active process and approach.

From a position at the intersection of contemporary drawing practice and New Materialism, she has produced artworks that stem from noticing and facilitating a material's capacity to draw.

Understanding drawing as a gesture that leaves a trace, her project embraces the drawing gestures already made by the actions and qualities of materials. She proposes that drawing activity pre-exists within the materials used to draw, and these gestures inhabit the drawing tools prior to making any marks.

The exhibition includes moving image and present drawings that might lean, crumple or sag, engaging spatially with the material apparatus of drawing; re-activating the stable ground of the medium. Removing the binary distinction between active maker and passive matter, her own gesture becomes that of the pointing hand, indicating what the material itself can do. Crouch is muted, framing the material as the thing which gestures and emphasising the emerging messy excess, imprints and leftovers of the activity.

Crouch’s PhD research is supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council through the White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities.
