Visiting Artist’s Talk – Nicolas Grum

For this week's Visiting Artist's Talk we welcome Nicolas Grum.

Nicolás Grum’s artistic practice consistently engages with themes of hierarchy, domination and power structures. He seeks to question what is considered established, official or ideal, with the aim of radicalising, deconstructing and expanding our understanding of social life, history and the institutions we interact with.

He uses a variety of media such as video, performance, sketches and sculptures, always conceiving of art as a collaborative practice that is developed within a specific community or in participation with other individuals or artists.

His recent projects have focused on interrogating how history and politics establish themselves as ideological monopolies. Through unofficial museum-like dioramas, videos or alternative guided visits to abandoned or over-exploited locations, he seeks to create a critical version of that which is denied, forgotten or rendered invisible.

He has participated in group and solo exhibitions in the US, Latin America, Europe and Asia. He has experience in teaching, lecturing and art direction for film. Grum took part in the Biennial 798 (Beijing, 2009), the Triennial de Chile (Santiago, 2009) and various solo and group shows in Chile, New York, Berlin, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro and other places. He has been awarded scholarships by the Ministry of Culture, Chile, on several occasions. He has also participated in several group projects based in Latin America, working in Medellin, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Valparaíso and La Paz.

Nicolás has a BFA, Fine Arts, from the Pontifícia Universidad Católica, Chile. He lives and works in Santiago, Chile.
