Visiting Artist’s Talk – Susan Stockwell

For this week's Visiting Artist's Talk we welcome Susan Stockwell.

Susan Stockwell has an established international reputation, working across sculpture, installation, collage and film.

Her practice is concerned with examining questions of feminism, materiality and social and colonial histories. Her art employs the material culture of everyday products, such as recycled computer components, maps and paper currency, which she transforms into compelling artworks. In seeking to reconnect an object’s past, its related history and materiality with contemporary issues, her practice underscores these materials urgent interconnection to collective memories, desires and ecological shortfalls; aspects that evoke, expose and challenge features of inequality and injustice.

Susan is best known for her site-specific installations and dress sculptures that have been exhibited widely, including: Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam (2020 and 2022); the Museum of London (2021–2022); Aspex Gallery Portsmouth (2018); the Royal Shakespeare Company (2015); TATE Modern, (2013); the Victoria & Albert Museum (2001, 2005, 2010), London; the National Museum of China, Beijing (2009); the Katonah Museum of Art, New York; and Art League of Houston, USA.

Her work is in public and private collections around the world, including: the Victoria & Albert Museum; the London Transport Museum; the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam; the Museum of European History, Brussels; Black Rock Investments; and Yale Centre for British Art, USA.

She is based between London and France.
