Visiting Artist's Talk - Julia Lohmann

For this week's Visiting Artist’s Talk, we welcome designer and researcher Julia Lohmann.

Julia Lohmann investigates and critiques the ethical and material value systems underpinning our relationship with flora and fauna. Her practice is based on an empathic, more than human-centric mindset. She views design as a connective discipline, linking fields of knowledge and enabling regenerative action in a world in climate crisis.

Julia is professor of Practice in Contemporary Design at Aalto University, Helsinki. She leads and contributes to a number of research consortia.

Julia Lohmann studied at the Royal College of Art, where she has also taught and completed an AHRC-funded collaborative PhD scholarship between the RCA and the Victoria & Albert Museum. As designer in residence at the V&A in 2013, Julia Lohmann founded the Department of Seaweed. The transdisciplinary community of practice explores the sustainable development of seaweed as a material for making and how macroalgae can help regenerate marine ecosystems.

Julia’s works are part of major public and private collections worldwide. She has received awards, bursaries and support from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the British Council, Jerwood Contemporary Makers, D&AD, Stanley Picker Gallery, Arts Foundation, Wellcome Trust and Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.

The Visiting Artists' Talks (VAT) series for 2021/22 takes place live via Zoom every Monday afternoon during teaching weeks.

Each session brings an arts professional to talk with us about what they do and why, and to chat with the student body honestly about their career journey and interests.

All our talks are compulsory for our Fine Art students but are also open to anyone else who would like to join us.
