Strings Attached: The Ties that Bind Yorkshire to it’s Global History

This exhibition illuminates an eclectic collection of jewellery, parts of swords, coins, and other items of value demonstrating Yorkshire’s connections with the rest of the world across two millennia.

The evidence of Yorkshire’s ancient global significance lies beneath our feet. Uncovered over hundreds of years, and now conserved by the York Museums Trust, these objects are taken from the Roman Era, the Migration Era and the Medieval Era, showing how people, beliefs and ideas have been transported through our county for centuries.

With modern technology, we can now share thoughts and ideologies across the globe in seconds. Though their journeys may have been longer, the arrival of these artefacts in York and the surrounding areas demonstrate a Yorkshire that has constantly evolved and renewed itself, housing people from many different walks of life.

Curated by MA students from the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, the exhibition uses the collection of objects found in the York Museum Trust Collection.

Globalisation isn’t a new concept: we in Yorkshire have always been well-connected.
