Visiting Artist's Talk — Emma Cousin

For this week's Visiting Artist's Talk (VAT), we welcome Emma Cousin.

Emma Cousin was born in Yorkshire, has been drawing since she could hold a pencil and continues to draw obsessively. She draws the things in front of her, things imagined and things felt. She paints a darkly comic cast of female characters to metaphorise ideas of support, mobility and progress.

Recent solo shows include: Milton Keynes Art Centre, Lewisham Arthouse Gallery, and Edel Assanti Gallery (London). Recent group exhibitions include: Soft Bodies at Castlefield Gallery (Manchester), the Jerwood Visual Arts show Survey at BALTIC (Gateshead), Bluecoat (Liverpool) and G39 (Cardiff), and Ultra at J.Hammond Projects (London).

Cousin started her own project space, Bread and Jam, which she ran for two years in her home in Brockley (2015-17). She recently established the podcast ‘Chats with artists under lockdown’. Her solo show at CCA Goldsmiths (London) opened in September.

The Visiting Artists' Talks (VAT) series for 2020/21 will welcome eighteen guests across two semesters to join us live via Teams every Monday afternoon during teaching weeks.

Each session brings an arts professional to talk with us (as a community) about what they do and why, and to chat with the student body honestly about their career journey and interests.

All of our talks are compulsory for our Fine Art students but open to anyone else who would like to join us.
