What made you want to apply to your course and to Leeds?
I only found a love for filmmaking toward the end of my BA. I wanted to explore it further in a Master’s degree.
What aspects of the course do you enjoy the most?
I enjoyed meeting other artists and having discussions and critiques surrounding our work.
Can you talk about your practice now, and how the course / opportunities outside of it have helped you to develop?
I feel more confident in my practice now and have a stronger body of film related work, which I feel I’m best at and enjoy making the most.
What would you say about the learning facilities in your School and at the University in general?
There’s loads of stuff for all different artistic practices that you can use. All you have to do is ask for it and you’ll get lots of help if needed.
I probably worked closest with Jenny Handley, who taught me how to use all the equipment and the editing software. I wouldn’t be making videos if not for her!
What other activities are available for students to take part in outside of their studies, and which ones have you tried out yourself?
I was in Film Society in first year. It was very fun, and they introduced me to a lot of movies that are now my favourites!
How do you think the skills and knowledge you’ve developed at Leeds will help with your career plans?
Practically, I’ve developed a lot of skills related to creating video work, and installing various other kinds of work. I’ve developed creation, editing, curation and advertising skills. You also pick up on a lot of knowledge on how to network and expand your practice.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?
Enjoy yourself! Experiment with lots of different mediums. Listen to all the feedback you get from tutors and peers. And go out and see a lot of art!
