Research Seminar: Digital Media and Networked Social Movements in Hong Kong and East Asia

This talk will present an overview of the speaker's own research on the role of digital media in networked social movements in Hong Kong.

Since 2019, a series of major protest movements emerged in various countries and cities in East Asia, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Myanmar and so on. These movements often take up the characteristics of networked social movements, such as being apparently leaderless, digitally enabled, and tactically fluid and innovative. This talk will present an overview of the speaker's own research on the role of digital media in networked social movements in Hong Kong, while also placing the case of Hong Kong in comparison with other cases in the region.
