Description
Irregular Art Schools was an action research project exploring different approaches to professional development for learning disabled and/or neurodivergent artists (LDNAs) who are members of Leeds-based inclusive arts studio Pyramid.
It identified the importance of flexible access to studio provision for the success of an artist's practice - the ability to choose when to work and for how long. We observed how flexible access to studio space was available at partner sites for artists without learning disabilities, yet not in the 'community' setting of Pyramid where access to their studio is dictated by rigid social care Support Plans reducing their choice, control, and independence.
The aim is of this project is to therefore explore the feasibility of providing a new flexible supported studio model for 20 artists at Pyramid. Pyramid's studio would be open for regular hours each week for them to access on a much more flexible basis, and for longer hours than they currently can, rather than set times during the week e.g., Wednesday 10-12. It is anticipated studio participation will vary from ad hoc use for some members, through to 3 or 4 individuals making regular use of the space for 8+ hours each week. To achieve this, Pyramid would develop and employ a new Studio Facilitator role for three days each week. The Studio Facilitator would open the building, support health and safety during opening hours, provide light touch creative and technical support, and contribute to collecting grounded insights on the uptake of the studio and impact on people's practices.
Impact
To capture and share findings the project will produce an impact report, targeted at service providers (e.g., local councils, arts organisations, and studios), detailing the implementation of the model and the positive outcomes for the individuals, alongside an easy read version and short film created with artists. These will also report on the challenges and feasibility of making this service permanent, evaluating possible future funding, either through project grant schemes or structural changes to the support packages given to individuals.
