Professor SM Burkinshaw

Profile

I hold the Chair in Textile Chemistry. I am a colour chemist by training and have carried out research in many aspects of coloration, mostly in collaboration with many of the world's largest chemical companies. During my time at Leeds, I have held several senior posts including Head of the School of Design and Dean of the Faculty of Performance, Visual Arts and Communication. I have supervised over 75 PhD and MSc students, as well as several postdoctoral research scientists and am currently Honorary Editor of the Elsevier journal, Dyes and Pigments which is the leading colour chemistry scientific journal. My research interests concern the chemistry and application of dyes and pigments, colour measurement and textile finishing. I have published extensively across a wide range of research areas in scientific journals, books and patents. My research activities have so far resulted in the formation of the University of Leeds spin-out company, Xeros Ltd., a new company focused on the development of "virtually waterless" laundry cleaning. Xeros is the brand name for a patented polymer based cleaning that creates step-change advantage in the cost and environmental impact of aqueous cleaning.
