The XR (extended reality) research group is dedicated to expanding the application of personalised immersive technologies to address specific human-computer interaction challenges in areas such as education, healthcare, transportation, and more. The group places a strong emphasis on capturing user needs and translating them into intuitive immersive solutions that are rigorously evaluated to the highest standards. Supported by substantial ongoing investment in XR, the school has established XLAB—an immersive space where researchers, postgraduates, and collaborators can come together to experiment with a wide range of immersive technologies.
With active industry engagement, XR research group members are given opportunities to collaborate on research projects that enhance their research profiles and foster knowledge exchange within the group. Members also have access to technical support and specialised equipment, including VR/MR headsets, haptics, 3D body scanners, motion capture systems, VR treadmills, EEG, and wearable eye-tracking devices.
The group’s uniqueness is further strengthened by the interdisciplinary backgrounds of its members, who come from diverse schools and faculties, encouraging innovative approaches to research. Members also benefit from attending demonstrations and meetings that explore current trends and applications of XR technologies. These sessions include training and drop-in events, helping members gain hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of how to integrate XLAB facilities into their current and future research.
