US Hill Foundation Scholarship Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an outstanding Home/EU graduate to receive a Hill US Foundation Scholarship to undertake a PhD at the School of Design.
Focusing on the need to establish a circular economy, and realising the importance of recycling within the textiles and garment industry, this PhD project will explore new technical solutions, using novel chemistries.
Novel chemistries for a circular economy in textiles and inkjet printing delivery – PhD project outline
This PhD research project will focus on creating new sustainable, benign chemical solutions to replace traditional textile chemicals with alternatives that are designed to be readily removed or degraded with a specific environmentally friendly trigger prior to recycling. The chemistries will be aimed at delivery to the textile material via digital (inkjet) printing, in line with the recognition that this application method offers considerable environmental benefits and is increasingly adopted by the industry.
The successful applicant will work in the School of Design, University of Leeds, which has a long tradition in textile science teaching and innovation that dates back to 1876.
The School houses excellent facilities that span the whole textile and fibre manufacturing process with the inkjet printing facilities in particular offering a state-of-the-art research material printer, cutting-edge drop-shape analyser, high-spec rheometer/viscometer and good all-round facilities housed in the purpose-built and newly refurbished Digital Print Centre.
The project will aim to commence in November 2016 or sooner. The student stipend is £14,296 with the tuition fees of £4,250 also paid as part of the scholarship.
