Dr Thomas Smith, a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the IMS, has received a Highly Commended award from the Janette Harley Prize committee for his monograph.
The Janette Harley Prize
The British Records Association (BRA) sponsors the Janette Harley Prize in memory of archivist Janette Harley (1951-2015). Janette was devoted to the BRA and remained a member throughout her life. The prize is intended to generate interest in archives, and raise awareness of research and achievements in the world of archives.
The next call for entries will be released in April 2019.
IMS Involvement
Dr Thomas Smith, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the IMS at the University of Leeds, received a Highly Commended award from the Janette Harley Prize committee for his monograph submission. Smith's research focuses on the high medieval papacy and on documentary and manuscript sources for the crusading movement.
Stephen Freeth, the Chair of the judging panel, described the 'broad range of entries' as coming from 'across the archival, academic and local history community, plus an interesting international element. All were of a high standard'.
Dr Smith submitted his monograph, Curia and Crusade: Pope Honorius III and the Recovery of the Holy Land, 1216-1227 (Brepols, 2017). Freeth described the monograph as 'a close study of the original manuscripts, which reveals details concealed or ignored by the printed editions'.
