Before coming to the IDEA Centre I was a PhD student at the University of Sheffield working in the field of metaethics. I defended a hybrid form of expressivism called 'higher-order expressivism' - roughly, the idea that moral judgements are composed out of both desire-like and belief-like states. My MA and BA were both at Sheffield too, separated by four years of training to be, and being, a teacher of mathematics.
My research interests primarily fall in the realm of moral philosophy. My strongest expertise is in metaethics, which touches on issues in the philosophy of language, logic, psychology and metaphysics, as well as theories of practical disagreement. I'm very interested in consequentialism, decision theories and the relationship between the two. I also have interests in gender theory and free will, and I continue to be frightened by the ever increasing threats brought on by climate change.
Research projects

Any research projects I'm currently working on will be listed below.
