Profile

I am a PhD researcher at the University of Leeds, studying part time and through distance learning.

My research explores human-chatbot interactions and relationships, addressing metaphysical and ethical questions that arise. I am seeking to make sense of what people mean when they claim to enter into a relationship with a chatbot and how these may compare with human-human relationships. By doing this, I hope to provide some normative grounding to help create a framework on how we can best navigate this rapidly developing technology and the increasing claims from chatbot users that they are in love with their digital companion.

My interest in the role of technologies in love and relationships began as part of my MA where I explored the role of ‘love drugs’ in enhancing and fostering love. This led to further research into the philosophy of love and relationships more broadly.

I also have research interests in the philosophy of religion and other areas of normative and applied ethics.

Outside of my academic studies, I hold Qualified Teacher Status and the position of Deputy Headteacher at a secondary school in Lincolnshire. Additionally, I have studied an additional National Project Qualification in Middle Leadership.
