Profile
I first joined Leeds in September 2023 for my MA in Applied Translation Studies. After that, I became interested in Audiovisual Translation as a field of study through my dissertation, which focused on dubbing as a mode and the diglossic nature of the Arabic language. After graduating from my MA with distinction, this interest then led me to continue reading into the field and into what is little known about the current professional media localisation scene in the Arab world. My current research focuses on subtitling as a mode, particularly on the social role beyond professionally produced subtitles.
Before coming to Leeds, I completed my BA in Applied English at the University of Jordan, which I am now affiliated with through my current research at Leeds.
Research interests
I am interested in Audiovisual Translation generally, but particularly in research on professional subtitling and subtitling as a profession. My main interest falls within sociological research on the subtitling process, and more specifically, the subtitler’s position, identity and function within society.
Other general research interests within Audiovisual Translation include multimodality, audience reception, translation sociology and dubbing. Although not as directly connected to the field, my other research interests include Arab studies, research on Arab identity and the Arab world, the Arabic language and Arabic-English translation.
