Profile
Hola! I guess that if you find this profile, it means that you are interested in the history of Spain or eugenics! I am a first-year PhD candidate at the School of History, funded by UKRI through WRoCAH. The provisional title of my thesis is: Love Properly, Reproduce Wisely: The Intersection of Anglo-Saxon, German Nordic and Latin Eugenic Views in Spain (1898-1939), under the supervision of Prof. Peter Anderson and Prof. Richard Cleminson.
I completed a bachelor’s degree in history in Santiago de Compostela’s University in 2022, being awarded the Extraordinary End of Studies Prize. Next, I studied for an MA in History in 2023 at Oxford Brookes University, where I graduated with a distinction. In addition, the School of History also awarded me the Detlef Mühlberger Prize for the best MA dissertation, under the title Neither Here Nor There: Latin Eugenic Notions in Gregorio Marañón’s Works between 1920-1942.
Then, I went on to complete a Teaching Master's in 2024 at Complutense University of Madrid. At the same time, I also received a JAE-Intro scholarship to work with the Spanish National Research Council under the supervision of Ricardo Campos Marin (Department of the History of Science).
My research interests range from the history of medicine and eugenics to the history of sexuality, particularly of homosexuality and queer history. If you are interested to discuss about these issues, please do not doubt to reach me thourgh my email or my Linkedin profile: www.linkedin.com/in/ezequiel-varela-vázquez-a5551927a
