Professor David Mattingley (University of Leicester)- 'What lay beyond? Rome and the peoples of the Sahara' (Joint meeting with the Roman Society).

Professor David Mattingley from Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Leicester will be visiting the Leeds Classical Association in a joint meeting with the Roman Society on Friday 04 May 2018. Professor Mattingley will be presenting a paper on 'What lay beyond? Rome and the peoples of the Sahara'.

Professor Mattingley is a specialist in the archaeology of the Roman empire and an active field archaeologist, who has published 25 authored or edited books. These include the 2011 monograph Imperialism, Power and Identity: Experiencing the Roman Empire. His research has concentrated in particular on Roman Africa. Professor Mattingley has been involved in two research projects on the Sahara: the Fazzan Project and the Desert Migration Project.

All are welcome to attend this talk, which will begin at 5.30pm and last about an hour. The talk will be preceded by refreshments and the Leeds Classical Association AGM in Michael Sadler Seminar Room 1.01 from 5pm (on the bridge between the Parkinson Building and the Michael Sadler Building: campus map).
