Building COIL capability in the UK and Ireland

Bringing together practitioners and stakeholders of collaborative online international learning (COIL) in the UK and Ireland to share practice, network, and imagine COIL's future in both countries

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) can contribute to fostering global citizenship and supporting Internationalisation at Home (IaH). Yet despite the benefits of COIL for students, academics, and institutions demonstrated in the literature, it has been noticeably underutilised in HE in the UK and Ireland.

This event seeks to bringing together practitioners and stakeholders in COIL in the UK and Ireland to share practice, network, and innovate for the future of COIL in both countries.  Seeking to ignite a community of practice to face and explore solutions to UK and Ireland-specific challenges and opportunities for COIL long into the future, it is hoped this symposium will mark the beginning of a journey into the unexplored potential for COIL in the UK and Ireland.

As well as covering the basics of COIL and presenting case studies, this event will also take a deeper look at embedding evidence-informed approaches to COIL.

This symposium will feature:

  • a keynote from Simone Hackett (Lecturer at The Hague University, PhD candidate at Utrecht University, and Chair of the EAIE Research Thematic Committee)  and Mark Dawson entitled Embedding evidence-informed COIL (including a look at the basics of COIL)
  • talks by Dr Müge Satar of Newcastle University and Dr Mirjam Hauck of the Open University on the subject of VE/COIL through the social justice and inclusion lens
  • a presentation on the work of UArctic by Izzy Crawford of Robert Gordon University
  • interactive sessions and opportunities for networking.

A detailed programme will be sent to participants shortly before the event.

This symposium would be of interest for academics, professional service staff, and academics leaders; for people new to COIL, and those who want to take COIL to the next level.
