Temporal and Eternal Goods: C.S. Lewis and the Idea of a Theistic Spirituality

Mark Wynn, University of Oxford.

In his autobiographical work A Grief Observed, C.S. Lewis remarks: 'this question [of the afterlife], however important it may be in itself, is not after all very important in relation to grief.' And in support of this view he provides a brief sketch of the relationship between the goods of our temporal lives and those of eternity. In this paper, I note how Lewis's account of this relationship may be taken to pose a difficulty for theistic spiritual practice, and I consider whether some of his other theological commitments invite a different approach.
