Summer Season: Alistair Vennart

This Summer Season event presents Alistair Vennart (viola) performing a programme featuring music spanning seven centuries.

Viola Threads

Guillaume de Machaut – Improvisation around ‘Douce Dame Jolie’
Paul Hindemith – Sonata for Solo Viola op. 25 no. 1 (Breit | Sehr frisch und straff)

Garth Knox – Beside the Bridge
Bartolomeo Campagnoli – Caprice no. 5
György Kurtág – Jelek op. 5 (Agitato | Giusto | Lento)

John Dowland – Improvisation around ‘If my complaints could passions move’
Henri Vieuxtemps – Capriccio
Garth Knox – Nine fingers

‘Viola Threads’ explores the chequered history of this intriguing member of the string family. Appearing in its modern form at about the same time as the Violin, the instrument has been treated with comparative disdain despite so many prominent composers playing the instrument themselves!

This virtually non-stop programme features music spanning seven centuries, weaving compositions from the viola pioneers Paul Hindemith, György Kurtág, Garth Knox, Henri Vieuxtemps and Bartolomeo Campagnoli together with improvisations based on the plainsong of John Dowland and Guillaume de Machaut.
