Ruoxi Cui

What made you want to apply to your course and to Leeds?

I have always been interested in the intersection of media, politics and public opinion, and the University of Leeds's Master of Political Communication is a perfect fit for my academic and professional ambitions. The course combines a strong theoretical foundation with practical insights, allowing me to critically analyze how political information is formed and disseminated, and giving me a deeper understanding of the political ecology of the media. In addition, the University of Leeds has a strong reputation in media and communication research and is ranked among the top institutions in the UK.

How do you think the skills and knowledge you develop at Leeds will help with your career success?

This course gave me a solid understanding of various theories of political communication, which is essential for anyone aspiring to work in the media, public affairs or international relations. The analytical and research skills I learned from the course are essential for work in journalism, policy making or digital media strategy. For a student from China, my academic English and interpersonal communication skills have also been improved. Academic expertise, practical experience and academic English communication are great help in my future employment and achieving my goals.

What aspects of the course did you enjoy the most?

I like the interactive discussions and debates on contemporary political issues and media strategies. The diverse perspectives of students from different cultural and professional backgrounds are very rich. Although some students, including me, need the guidance of teachers to better participate in the discussion, I think expression and discussion can deepen the understanding of the manifestation of knowledge in reality.

What would you say about the learning and the support facilities in your School and at the University in general?

The School of Media and Communication provides an excellent learning environment with access to top academic resources, research databases, and digital media tools. The teaching staff is very supportive and always encourages students to think critically and develop their own research focus.

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?

This course is a great choice if you have an interest in politics, media and communications, and is suitable for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of political communication and develop skills and insights for a career in media, public affairs or research.
