Dr Peter Rhodes

Profile

I was awarded a first class BSc honours degree in computing and subsequently a PhD for my thesis Computer Mediated Colour Fidelity and Communication from Loughborough University of Technology. This work led to the development of ColourTalk, the first what-you-see-is-what-you-get system for colour specification and communication within the textile industry.

Joining the Department of Colour Science as a Senior Research Fellow in 2004, I led its two taught MSc programmes. I then moved to the School of Design in 2012 where I was programme leader for BA Design and Colour Technology. From 2013-2018, I was the School's Director of Student Education.

I have authored over 60 academic publications which include book chapters on colour management, colour notation systems and uniform colour spaces. In 2009, I was the co-recipient of the Itek Award for an outstanding publication in the field of imaging science and in 2012 received the CGIV12 Best Interactive Paper award (both from the Society for Imaging Science and Technology). I have also contributed towards the development of the ISO 10617 standard for colorimetric communication, and in 2020 was awarded the Society of Dyers and Colourists’ Silver Medal for dedicated services to the Society and colour research.

After supporting the third European Conference on Colour in Graphics, Imaging and Vision (CGIV 2006) as Audio-visual Chair, in 2013 I was the Publications Chair for the 12th Congress of the International Colour Association, held in Newcastle which attracted over 500 conference papers.  I was also a member of the organising committee for the 91st Textile Institute World Conference (TIWC 2018: Integrating Design with Sustainable Technology).

Research interests

I have co-supervised nine PhD students to completion, with topics such as gamut mapping, image quality, colour appearance measurement and the impact of colour on impulsivity.  I have also been engaged in a diverse range of commercially-oriented research and development projects, including the objective assessment of fabric pilling, a fundamental investigation into the apparent intensity of flashing lights, and high-fidelity colour printing.
