IMS Emeritus Professor elected Fellow of the British Academy

Professor Ian N. Wood, IMS Emeritus Professor of Early Medieval History, was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in July 2019.

The British Academy elected 76 new Fellows on 19 July 2019, ‘in recognition of their achievements in the humanities and social sciences’. Fellows join a community of the UK’s leading minds. The British Academy is a fellowship, funding body for national and international research, and ‘a forum for debate and engagement’. 

Professor Ian N. Wood, Emeritus Professor of Early Medieval History in the IMS at the University of Leeds, was elected as a Fellow this July. Wood’s research focuses on the religious and cultural history of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. In addition, Wood serves as the Consulting Editor for the International Medieval Bibliography (IMB). 

Emilia Jamroziak, Professor of Medieval Religious History and Director of the IMS, described this as ‘a much deserved honour, not just in terms of recognising Ian’s transformative contribution to new understandings of the Early Middle Ages and medievalism, but also in terms of his work on fostering international research networks across Europe, Eastern Europe and more recently Southern America’. 

The British Academy policy asserts that ‘the humanities and social sciences have a rich and unique contribution to make to the world we live in. The British Academy’s fellowship represents breadth and excellence of expertise across these disciplines, and the Academy’s policy and research work is dedicated to applying that insight to policy issues for the public benefit and societal wellbeing’. It is an honour for a member of the IMS to join this Academy.
