Media Futures: How to kickstart your career in PR

Think a career in digital PR could be for you? Our Media Futures guests today are at different stages of their careers so they can give you insights from your first steps in PR/marketing into how to get to the top.

To help you get a feel for what a career in digital PR could look like, they will talk you through the day-to-day aspects of the role to the standout projects they’ve worked on. There will be an opportunity to meet the panel and network with them after the event.

Meet the panel

Ellie Stewart (@elliestewartPR) graduated with a first class degree in Media and Communication from the University of Leeds in 2020. During her studies she carried out work experience at a number of digital marketing agencies, leading to a full-time role in digital PR with performance marketing agency, Journey Further (@JourneyFurther).

Ellie is now a PR Strategist at Journey Further, leading on the digital PR strategy for a number of clients and has worked with a number of big brands including Virgin Money, Oliver Bonas, M&S, musicMagpie and Red Letter Days.

Megan Johnson works as the only Digital Marketer within a tech company which means their role is extremely diverse and wide-spanning across web development, copywriting, graphic creating, social media managing, public relations, event management, voice-over presenting, video editing, and marketing analytics (and basically everything else in-between!).

Megan graduated from the Journalism BA course at the University of Leeds last year and managed to also grab some experience with Channel 4 and Bauer Media before accepting a fulltime Digital Marketing Lead role.

Billy Truswell (@BillyTruswell)  is Videographer, Photographer & Vlogger at Journey Further, which he joined in 2020. Looking after all things video and content production, his role ranges from shooting agency vlogs and covering live events to producing social-first content to help promote the business and drive brand awareness.

Prior to this, Billy spent two and a half years working in consumer PR and social media. Billy studied Broadcast Journalism at University of Leeds from 2014-2017.
