"Test, Test, Test" – exhibition

Exhibition of work by Tianyou Huang, practice-based postgraduate researcher at the University of Leeds.

Tianyou Huang is a Practice-led PhD candidate in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds. He completed his BA in Sculpture at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China, and MA in Sculpture at Royal College of Art, London. In 2018, he was awarded the Yorkshire Sculpture Park Graduate Award.

Tianyou Huang's fine art practice involves sculpture, kinetic installation, experimental art and painting. The idea of “play” in Huang's doctoral thesis – “Making art in a playful way: how do people find humour when they experience the artist’s play?” – is defined as the brilliant “process” made by the artist in the work. He discusses play through Eastern and Western art respectively, and gives his works as examples to demonstrate what practical methods we can use to create humour by playing in art.

In Huang's practice, he assembles daily objects in experimental ways – he seldom uses objects in their normal function, but transforms their symbols and exposes them deliberately to a complex and absurd procedure, presenting an artistic effect that subverts our daily experience.

In “Test, Test, Test”, Tianyou Huang will work with “testing” and try to maintain a sense of experimenting in his practice to see if his ideas could work.
