Description

Applications are open for a two-year programme to support early-career scholars working in Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Iraq to publish an academic article in an international journal in the discipline of translation studies. Over two workshops, participants will receive intensive training on key skills for publishing in leading journals as well as broader academic skills. They will also receive individual mentoring and feedback from established scholars in the field throughout the programme. The workshops are funded by a grant from the British Academy in the UK and will be hosted in Amman by the Council for British Research in the Levant.

Who will be supporting me?

What’s included?

  • Travel, accommodation and subsistence costs to attend the workshops are fully covered
  • Visiting researcher status at Queen’s University Belfast until April 2028. This provides free access to online library resources.
  • Mentoring (October 2026-April 2028). Participants will have three mentoring meetings with either Professor Baker, Professor Harding or Dr Sadler to give individualised support and feedback over the course of the programme.
  • Workshop 1 – Research design and planning (February 2027). Topics will include: what international journals in translation studies are looking for and how they assess submissions; the publication process; key issues in research design and methodology; emerging areas of research in translation and interpreting research
  • Workshop 2 – Refining your work for submission and wider academic skills development (August 2027). Topics will include: refining drafts from ‘nearly finished’ to ‘finished’; performing and responding to peer review; applying for research grants and collaborating internationally
  • Online symposium (March 2028) – participants will be invited to share their work in an online symposium in to enable final refinement prior to submission and receive feedback on presentation skills.

Who is the programme for?

The programme is designed for early career scholars with a strong commitment to publishing high quality research in translation and interpreting who feel that additional training and support would help them to do this. The aim is for all participants to have an article draft ready for submission to an international journal by April 2028. We welcome applicants from varied personal and academic backgrounds. As the training provided will focus specifically on translation and interpreting studies, applicants should plan to publish within this discipline.
